Agrigento, Valley of the Temples & Scala dei Turchi
Ancient Greece on African soil, and the most dramatic coastline in Sicily.
Stand before temples that have endured for 2,500 years. The Valley of the Temples is not a ruin in the conventional sense; it is one of the best-preserved Greek sanctuaries in the world, a place where the ancient past is still visible, still standing, still overwhelming.
Agrigento was founded by Greek colonists in 580 BC and grew into one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Mediterranean. At its height, it rivalled Athens in wealth and ambition. What remains today is a ridge of Doric temples stretching nearly three kilometres along a limestone bluff above the sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of rare and extraordinary scale.
The Temple of Concordia is among the most complete Greek temples on earth, its honey-coloured columns still intact after millennia of earthquakes, invasions, and time. The Temple of Juno looks out over the valley below in dignified solitude. The fallen columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus hint at what was once the largest Doric temple ever attempted, a building so ambitious it was never finished.
Then the landscape shifts entirely. A short drive along the coast brings you to Scala dei Turchi, a formation of brilliant white marl rock that descends to the sea in natural steps. The contrast is almost surreal: from the weight of ancient history to something raw, elemental, and arrestingly beautiful. The white terraces against the turquoise water below is one of those images that defines Sicily for those who have seen it.
Walking the Valley at the right hour, when the light turns the stone to gold, and ending the day at the edge of the Mediterranean, is one of those combinations that stays with you long after Sicily is behind you.
