Syracuse, Ortigia & Noto Tour
2,700 years of history, from ancient Greek power to Baroque perfection.
Begin in Syracuse, once the most powerful city in the Greek world and rival to Athens itself. The Archaeological Park of Neapolis holds the magnificent Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the legendary Ear of Dionysius, a towering limestone cave with extraordinary acoustics.
Cross the bridge to Ortigia, the island heart of Syracuse, where layers of civilization stack on top of each other. The Cathedral was literally built into and around a Greek temple, its ancient columns still visible today. The streets here are alive with markets, seafood restaurants, and architecture that spans over two millennia.
The day concludes in Noto, universally recognized as the capital of Sicilian Baroque. Rebuilt entirely after the devastating earthquake of 1693, Noto is a masterpiece of urban planning and golden limestone architecture. The Cathedral, the Palazzo Ducezio, and the balconies of Palazzo Nicolaci are reason enough to visit, and the warm honey-coloured stone glows with particular magic in the afternoon light.
